In this session, Dr Lucy Scott (Veterinary Behaviour Services NZ) introduces the concept of "behavioural first aid"—a practical, triage-based approach to identifying and managing behaviour concerns before they escalate. Learn to recognise common problem behaviours in dogs, spot pain-related red flags, and avoid common pitfalls like well-meaning punishment or flooding. We’ll cover what you can do in clinic to support clients, provide safety advice and guide them toward the right help—whether that’s training, behaviour modification, or referral to a behaviour professional. This talk empowers you to play a crucial role in early intervention and welfare-focused care.

Dr Lucy Scott graduated from Massey University in 2015, then spent 7 years doing mixed practice in the Waikato. In 2021, she completed a membership to the ANZCVS in Veterinary Behaviour and started her business Veterinary Behaviour Services NZ. She is currently completing a Master’s in Clinical Animal Behaviour through the University of Edinburgh and provides in-person and online behaviour consultations NZ wide for dogs, cats and horses.
