"It’s An Emergency – What Now?"
Presented by Megan Brashear, BS, RVT, VTS (ECC) from Purdue University Veterinary Hospital, focuses on the importance of triage in veterinary emergencies.
The session covers key principles of emergency triage, the development and implementation of effective triage protocols, and the role of each team member in handling emergency cases. Topics include phone and lobby triage, recognising critical conditions, and establishing efficient communication between clients and hospital staff. Attendees will gain a structured approach to prioritising emergency patients to improve outcomes and workflow efficiency.

Megan Brashear
BS, RVT, VTS (ECC) from Purdue University Veterinary Hospital
Megan Brashear, BS, RVT, VTS (ECC) graduated in 2000 with a BS in Veterinary Technology and obtained her Veterinary Technician Specialty in Emergency/Critical Care in 2004.
She has enjoyed working in emergency and critical care since 2000 and is the Senior Manager of Veterinary Nursing at the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital in West Lafayette, Indiana. Here, Megan genuinely enjoys the opportunity to work with veterinary nursing supervisors as well as teach and train veterinary technicians and students in the hospital.
She loves to travel and lecture, sharing her knowledge with veterinary technicians and nurses around the world.
Megan loves goofy bird dogs and currently shares a home with two German Shorthaired Pointers and an impossibly old cat.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the Fundamentals of Veterinary Triage: Participants will learn how to assess and categorise emergency cases using a structured triage system to prioritise critical patients effectively.
- Enhance Communication and Team Coordination: Attendees will gain skills in phone and lobby triage, improving communication between front desk staff, technicians, and veterinarians to ensure seamless patient care.
- Recognise and Respond to Life-Threatening Conditions: Participants will be able to identify key emergency signs such as respiratory distress, neurological abnormalities, and trauma, ensuring rapid intervention for improved patient outcomes.
