Keep it Sweet: Nursing the Diabetic Patient

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine diseases encountered in practice. Whether we see these patients for routine re-assessments or diabetic monitoring, initial diagnosis, and treatment, or as a diabetic emergency with hypoglycaemia or diabetic ketoacidosis, the nurses' role in managing these patients is vast.

In this session, we will cover the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus, the differences between canine and feline diabetes, the clinical signs and diagnostics performed, and the treatment and nursing considerations these patients benefit from.

Educational outcomes:

  • Learn and understand how diabetes impacts your patients.
  • Learn how to deliver effective treatment and nursing care to your diabetic cats and dogs.
  • Understand the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus and DKA, and how this differs between dogs and cats
  • To be aware of the common clinical signs and diagnostic tests performed in diabetic and DKA patients, and how they differ between dogs and cats.

About the Presenter:

Laura Jones

BSc(Hons) DipAVN(Small Animal) ISFMDipFN VTS(IM-SA) RVN. Registered Veterinary Nurse, Veterinary Technician Specialist in Small Animal Medicine and Clinical Educator in Medical Nursing.

Laura started her nursing career in 2007 at a small GP clinic and became a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) in 2010. Over the years, she gained experience in first-opinion, surgical referral, and emergency clinics.

In 2015, she joined the internal medicine team at a new referral centre as deputy head medicine nurse. This role sparked her passion for internal medicine, and in 2019, she earned her Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) qualification in Small Animal Internal Medicine.

To share her knowledge, Laura created Veterinary Internal Medicine Nursing, a platform offering CPD to registered and student nurses through a website, podcast, and social media. She also lectures internationally, has written for peer-reviewed journals, and launched the Medical Nursing Academy in 2023—a learning platform for nurses passionate about internal medicine.

Despit her many achievements, Laura continues to work as a practicing RVN, dedicated to providing excellent care for her patients and supporting fellow nurses.
